Tonight!

Been looking forward to this all month:

This holiday season has been rough, but it's been good too, seen people I normally wouldn't get a chance to, planning on dancing my fool head off, play new stuff to knock your fishnets off, and I hope to see all sorts of friendly faces tomorrow, and Sunday too!

Sooo, it's only eleven days until the wedding! Wow, this has been nerve-racking. We've still got soo much to do, and we seem to get hung up on the details. Sending out the invites has been a nightmare. Our families are huge, and the venue we picked wasn't so we didn't get to invite nearly as many as we would've liked. We've sent out invitations, only to have some come back to us as undeliverable and others get completely lost in the mail. We've contacted whoever we could, wherever we could, and most people have been responsive, even taking initiative and contacting us before mailing their responses. There are still a few people we haven't heard from, and we've got a guest count due before the end of the week.

And to add to the communication breakdown, we "followed ettiquette" and didn't include registry information in the invitation. In answer to the many calls we are getting, and those of you who may not have known we are registered, or even who to ask, we're breaking ettiquette.

We are registered at Bed Bath and Beyond and at Home Depot. HD's registry has been another source of grief; their customer service swears they see us in their system, but no one we've talked to seems able to find it.

God and there's still so much more to do!

Pros and Cons of the Day

So I've organized some more around the house, cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, confirmed the fabric order for the wedding dress, got in touch with my best friend (highlight of the day!), and done three loads of laundry.

I've also sat in a hot car in traffic for 90 minutes, passed up an opportunity to go discount shoe shopping, and had an absurdly frustrating experience at the Burger King by the medical center. To make a long story short, through a breakdown in communication, we got the wrong order and then he started bitching about how I was trying to 'gyp' the restaurant (his words not mine) for this rinky-dink toy. What a load of crap! All I wanted to do was get this toy for the boy, because I'd promised I'd take him. We hardly ever do fast food, and service like this has a lot to do with that. And I had to deal with a door-to-door salesman while trying to get dinner ready.

But overall, I feel pretty good about today. If that cashier hadn't pissed me off, I probably wouldn't have done as much as I have around the house. And I got the dinner date set with Jen, which is a big relief. We can get wedding stuff done. Yay!

Hello el jay!
I know we haven't spoken in awhile so I thought I'd drop you a line. Work's been fine, and after finally getting my w-2, I stand a decent chance of recovering a social life. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, at any rate.

Moving on. I had 3 resolutions this New Year's: pick up a hobby, whip the house into company-worthy shape (by March), get more serious about planning my wedding. So I've taken up knitting. After starting and unravelling the beginnings of a scarf about 6 times, I can do a knit stitch and make a mean garter stitch and, after a weekend, am 3/4 finished with Wilde's scarf. Soon I'll learn to bind off and move on to purl stitch and conquer the stockinette/reverse stockinette stitch. Then my house will be covered in colinette. I'll make a cozy for it. But seriously, it's just nice to have one more thing I can do well with my hands.

Pee es, my endeavors to do something constructive has spurred others around the house to do the same. Wilde wants to knit, so we are 'knitting numbers' (working on a times table) to get him fluent with multiplication. Bronster is supposed to get her own set of needles and I'll show her what I know so we can hobble along together, and Adam has gone back to woodworking. He's starting small, just a two-tier coffee table, but we could always use new furniture and storage solutions.

I'm going to finish up my laundry. That is all for now.

Some of you know that Adam's mother has been ill for awhile. After a 2 month struggle in the hospital, his mother passed at 2:39 pm September 12.

It's been a rough, frustrating time for all the family. Long days and stale coffee in a cold waiting room. Uncontrollable emotional turns. It's been good in some ways, too. I've seen family members I haven't seen in years, and found I could put aside petty differences and old fights, because this was IMPORTANT. I've seen unbelievable strength in my own son, he's been so brave through this whole thing, unselfish, smart and loving. He had such a great connection and loved his granny deeply, just as her son had such a close and loving bond. He spoke to her, knowing she could hear him, even after she passed. He was not afraid to touch her and embraced her body before it was removed, hugging her close and saying he would see her later.

I can't forget how tough it was to tell Wilde about his granny's death. We've been both dreading and expecting this, but I never thought it would be like this. I came home early from work and he beamed at me, surprised I was home early. I told him he needed to get dressed, that we were going to the hospital. "But it's daytime", he said. We usually went at night, staying sometimes till morning. I know, sweetheart, but this visit's different. "Why?" he said. I was holding him and then told him I had bad news. That granny had died. His face sank, and he curled into me, like a string holding him upright had snapped. I never want to see that again, it hurts my heart so much. He didn't want it to be true. He asked if it could change back, and if she could be alive again. He even asked if she had drank the holy water yet, because he thought that would bring people back to life. Wouldn't it be nice if it worked like that? I had to explain to him that it didn't.

We were all stiff-lipped till we arrived at her room. walking through that curtain felt like sliding into ice water. I thought I'd stay composed, be strong for my son and his father, this whole family. I saw my sisters-in-law and knew I couldn't do it. It would be easier to hold back a flood with clingwrap. I think somehow this is true strength. Somewhere in that room was relief, too.

I found myself irrationally angry with "the lady" in the waiting room. She's been there this whole time, here for he husband's illness, and I think she's half-crazed from this torture. But he's still here. We've graduated somehow to something different, and it's not right.

I'm not sure where we are going from here. I'll let you know.

My doofus moment for the month

So we bought a dresser this week and Purple put it together. I've been working on the paint after work. Bumped my upper arm into a drawer once, and it's taking forever to get it off (Lotsa 'Hey! Something's on your arm!).

Yesterday, I started sealing the paint with a clear coat of polyurethane. I end up with polyurethane running bown my brush and all over my hand. I figured I'll just clean up when I'm done, but it had already started to dry by that time, and it wouldn't wash off. At all.

I'd sealed my hand against the elements!

Tried washing with soap and water like, five or six times, but the polyurethane just laughed it off. Tried washing my hands in acetone, but that just pissed it off. I ended up transferring the stuff all over both hands, and it was still just as sticky. I tried scraping it off my hands. Pathetic.

It still wasn't completely dry this morning when I was getting ready for work, although my shampoo mananged to strip some of it off. It took ten minutes and a bottle of Goo Gone to de-tack my hands.

So today I've applied the second coat of polyurethane. But this time, I made sure to sport the latex. Fool me once...
